How some of the most common birth injuries occur

On Behalf of | May 18, 2022 | Injuries |

In New York, birth injuries can happen to anyone, regardless of their health or the health of their baby. There are many different types of birth injuries and some are more common than others.

Cerebral palsy

This is one of the most common birth injuries, and it can happen when the brain gets damaged during pregnancy or delivery. Cerebral palsy can cause problems with movement and muscle control, as well as learning and development. Cerebral palsy is not curable, but there are treatments that can help improve the symptoms.

Erb’s palsy

Erb’s palsy is a type of birth injury that affects the nerves in the shoulder and arm. It can happen when the baby’s head gets pulled to one side during delivery. This can damage the nerves and cause paralysis in the affected arm.

Fractures

Fractures can happen when the baby is delivered with forceps or vacuum extraction. Fractures can also occur if the bones are weak or brittle. Most fractures will heal on their own, but some may require surgery to correct.

Skull fractures, for instance, are most commonly seen in premature babies. They often happen when babies are delivered with forceps or vacuum extraction.

Dislocations

Dislocations can occur when the bones are pulled out of place. This can happen during a difficult delivery, or if the baby is large. Dislocations can be painful and may require surgery to correct.

Shoulder dislocation is one of the most common types of birth injury. It happens when the shoulder gets out of place during delivery. This can be painful and may require surgery to correct.

Spinal cord injuries

Spinal cord injuries can happen when the spinal cord is damaged during pregnancy, delivery or after birth. This can cause paralysis, loss of sensation, and other problems. Spinal cord injuries are often permanent and can be life-threatening.

Birth injuries can have a major impact on the health and development of a child. If you think your child may have a birth injury, you may have a medical malpractice case.
